Compassion Smiles FAQs
How should I care for my teeth?

You should be brushing (at least) twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. It’s recommended that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush, but toothbrush type is a personal preference. You should also be flossing daily, either before or after brushing. Mouthwash is recommended to kill remaining bacteria in the mouth.

How often should I visit the dentist?

For most people, it’s recommended that dentist visits should happen twice a year. These visits consist of an exam and a dental cleaning. For those who have had procedures done or who have suffered from oral health issues such as periodontal (gum) disease, more frequent visits may be needed.

What do I do in the event of a dental emergency?

Depending on the nature of the emergency, you may or may not have to get immediate medical attention. A cracked or broken tooth may be uncomfortable, but generally can be treated at home until you’re able to make an appointment with your dentist; however, it's very important to contact the dental office as soon as you experience a dental emergency to ensure you receive treatment as soon as possible. Apply a cold compress to relieve pain and swelling.

On the other hand, if a tooth has been knocked out, you will need to see your Coppell, TX dentist at Compassion Smiles as soon as possible to have it put back in place. Do not handle the tooth by the root, only touch the crown, and rinse it off. If it cannot be placed back into its socket, keep it in a container of milk or your saliva until you can get it to the dentist.

What foods should I be consuming/avoiding for healthy teeth?

Sugary foods should be limited for healthy teeth, as well as teeth-staining drinks, such as wine, tea, and coffee. Crunchy foods like apples and celery can help clean teeth and are nutritious as well. Additionally, strawberries, carrots, and dairy items like cheese provide nutrients and vitamins for strong, healthy teeth.
