Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns help to fix a wide range of issues including the following:

  • As an added protection for teeth that are broken or damaged
  • Keep a cracked tooth together
  • Rebuild worn down teeth
  • To help support a dental bridge
  • To cover over a discolored or misshapen tooth
  • Placed over a root canal as protection

What is a Dental Crown Made Of?

Dental crowns are typically made of tooth-colored ceramic, porcelain, or metal alloys. Your dentist will help decide which option is best for your specific situation and needs.

How is a Crown Placed?

Your dentist may ask you to come visit the clinic at least two times in order to complete the crown. The first visit may include preparing the tooth for the crown. This involves removing any decayed or damaged areas on the tooth. Your dentist will then reshape the tooth. The crown needs enough space so as to not interfere with the bite of the upper and lower teeth. They will then provide a temporary dental crown while the permanent crown is being prepared in a lab. During the second visit, your dentist will apply the permanent dental crown.

How Do I Care for a Dental Crown?

Caring for dental crowns is similar to caring for your natural teeth. Regular flossing and brushing are essential as well as appointments with our dental office.
